Meet Dr. John F. Freiler

Dr. John F. Freiler, the founder of Premier Allergy TX, is passionate about clinical medicine and proud to use his expertise to offer state-of-the-art allergy and asthma diagnostics and treatments for patients under his care. A dedicated Air Force Allergist-Immunologist, Dr. John F. Freiler retired from the military in the grade of Colonel in 2021 with 22 years of active-duty military service to serve the San Antonio community. He is board-certified in Allergy and Immunology and Internal Medicine.


Dr. Freiler combines knowledge with compassion and is proud to offer allergy and asthma relief for patients under his care. Like many patients he now treats, Dr. Freiler suffered from hay fever for years before he realized that his symptoms didn’t have to be part of his everyday life. He knows firsthand how it feels to have allergies that keep you from enjoying what you want to do, and as a result, he has become an empathetic doctor who always takes the time to listen to his patient’s needs. He enjoys spending time with family, living a healthy lifestyle, and staying active in his free time.

Education & Academic Achievements

  • Undergraduate Degree: Dr. Freiler completed his undergraduate studies in Biotechnology with honors in Biopsychology at William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ.


  • Medical Degree:  He earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Jersey. He is also the recipient of the prestigious USAF Health Professions Scholarship Program. 


  • Residency:  Completed his internal medicine residency at Wright-Patterson Medical Center, Dayton, OH.


  • Fellowship:  He received specialized training in Allergy and Immunology at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC), San Antonio, Texas.

Military Career

  • He served as a Chief Consultant to the USAF Surgeon General for both Allergy & Immunology and Internal Medicine. 
  • Selected as a core teaching faculty member for the Air Force’s sole Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program

Publications & Mentorship

  • Dr. Freiler has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts. 
  • Actively mentors and educates healthcare professionals throughout his career as a board-certified allergist. 

Distinguished Military Career

COLONEL (Dr.) John F. Freiler


Chief Consultant Role:


  • Served as the Chief Internal Medicine and Allergy/Immunology Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General at the Air Force Medical Readiness Agency (AFMRA), Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), Texas.


  • Acted as the primary advisor and subject matter expert for Internal Medicine, Subspecialty, Dermatology, Genetics, and Radiology services.


  • Provided guidance on Graduate Medical Education, staffing, readiness, deployment, training, and career counseling for Active-Duty physicians.


Education & Early Career:


  • Worked in a pharmaceutical immunoassay lab before entering the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant.
  • Recommissioned as a Captain upon graduation in 1999.


Military Assignments & Roles:


  • Served as a Staff Internist at McChord AFB, WA, after completing training.
  • Worked as a Staff Allergist at David Grant USAF Medical Center following fellowship training in San Antonio.
  • Entered private practice as an allergist with ENT and Allergy Associates, Parsippany, NJ, before recommissioning.
  • Served as a Staff Allergist at Eglin USAF Regional Hospital, Eglin AFB, FL.
  • Held multiple leadership positions at Eglin AFB:
  • Medicine Flight Commander
  • Associate Chief of the Medical Staff
  • Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Allergy and Immunization Clinic
  • Returned to San Antonio, TX, serving as:
  • Clinical Core Faculty for the SAUSHEC Allergy and Immunology Fellowship GME Program
  • Allergy and Immunizations Flight Commander at JBSA Lackland, TX
  • Served in the US Army New Jersey National Guard before joining the Air Force as an Aircraft Electrician at Picatinny Arsenal, Wharton, NJ.


Post-Military Career:

Upon military retirement, he founded Premier Allergy TX in San Antonio, TX, where he currently serves as an allergy immunology specialist in solo medical practice.  

Beyond the Clinic

Dr. Freiler maintains an active lifestyle that reflects his commitment to health and wellness. He enjoys working out, mountain biking, hiking, and staying current with medical advances. His dedication to continuous learning extends to his monthly reading of National Geographic magazine.
